Abstract: |
Guided tactical missiles are a key weapon in modern warfare which designers aim at increasing their range and lethality. In the conceptual design process of a tactical missile, a major problem of designing an optimal trajectory satisfying maximum range emerges. Also, focusing (only) on this design aspect may cause degradation in other design aspects such as structural considerations and flight control demands. Hence, it is highly recommended to take into consideration all flight, control, and structural aspects in the early phases of design. In this paper, the trajectory of a generic tactical missile is tailored for maximum range. The associated impact on the missile load factor is assessed. The role of adding practical constraints including minimum allowable dynamic pressure and maximum allowable rate for flight path angle values on the trajectory problem is discussed. A commercial, well-validated non-linear optimal control package based on MATLAB software is adopted as a trajectory design tool. |
